Republican Women's Club, Frederick County
A Few Words from Madam President;
Dear Friends (and Volunteers!!),
The Republican Women's Club of Frederick County has empowered women since 1920. It has a history traceable to dynamic woman leaders and major political undertakings. Today's current board of directors is just as dynamic. The club has amassed a proud heritage and countless bragging rights.
The Club meets at 6:00 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month at Lohr's Family Restaurant located at 911 East Patrick Street in Frederick
The Board Members are as follows;
Historically, it was a woman named Mrs. Henrietta W. Livermore who ignited the club into a formal organization in September 1920. It all started by a newspaper ad in the September 8th morning edition of the Frederick newspaper announcing an 8 o'clock meeting for September 9th at the Court House. Mrs. Livermore was a key figure in the suffrage for women movement which led to the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution granting women the right to vote-ultimately ratified on August 18, 1920.
Mrs. Livermore advised those assembled on September 9th that the Republican platform and principles hinged on four words: "efficiency, law, freedom and Americanism." From that day forward she provided the Club a prominent place in Maryland political history. Just 22 days after the 19th Amendment ratification, the Club adopted a formal organization, with Mrs. Bertha Trail as the Club's first Chair. Other elected officers were: Mrs. John H. McClaggett, Mrs. Frances H. Markell, Miss Pearl A. Eader, Mrs. Joseph H. Apple, and Mrs. Frances Doub.
Today, the Frederick Club has the foremost distinction of being the first established Republican Women's Club in the United States that continues to be active. Historical records provide ample evidence that from its inception to the present time the Club has continued to compile an enviable record of accomplishments. Republican women who hold membership and leadership positions in the Club today are just as passionate as their sisters of yesteryear.
Yes, the Women's Club is always seeking new members, especially nowadays with the unsettling political climate. Annual membership is only $25.00 and which also includes membership in the State and National Federations of Republican Women.
We need YOU to be successful! Please let us know how you can help to ensure that Frederick stays RED in 2010!
